Asteraceae Crop Guides

  • When to plant
    Plant tubers in Spring
Jerusalem Artichoke, Helianthus tuberosus, a herbaceous perennial also called Sunchoke

    How to plant
As Jerusalem Artichokes spread easily it is recommended to grow them in pots which are in full sun. Prepare the soil with a good supply of potassium. Avoid nitrogen or the tops will grow at the expense of the roots. Plant tubers 5cm deep.

    Care
Whilst Jerusalem Artichokes are quite drought tolerant, keep them well watered to promote growth of large tubers.

    Harvest
Grow through the Summer to 1.5m tall with smallish sunflowers then dig up the tubers in late Autumn after the plant has browned off.

    Troubleshooting
Slugs like to eat the first tender shoots. Can be affected by powdery mildew so water in the morning. Also look out for aphids which can be managed with Eco Oil.
